Each level has 5 modules of study each taking about eight weeks to complete.

Requirements:

Each student must pay $15.00 for food and supplies used in class. However, the student must provide his or her own materials for sewing a craft project. Detailed outlines to aid in purchasing supplies for these projects will come home with the student about 2 weeks before the supplies are due at school. Several fabric outlets give discounts to students if student discount cards are presented upon time of purchasing. These cards will be distributed at John Ware.

Core Module Themes:

Food

Reviews and refines safety and sanitation, basic nutrition, working an consumer skills through a study of select foods fitting into Canada's Four Food Groups.

Note:

Foods studied and produced are different in each level.

Challenges and Choices:

This module takes the student through some life cycle situations requiring decision making, problem solving and goal setting skills. The student will create a hand crafted item suitable as a gift for a friend or relative.

Sewing:

This module reviews and refines skills. Concepts of fiber characteristics related to fabric care are introduced. The student will create something simple to wear using a commercial pattern, basic tools and equipment such as the sewing machine and serger. Students who have taken Sewing I and or Sewing II should select a project suitable to his/her skills level. It is the intent that he/she be challenged and develop further at each level.

Meal Planning:

This module focuses on planning a meal freom start to finish exploring time and task management. Meal planning for people with specific eating disorders and illnesses will also be examined.

Elective Purpose Sewing:

This module applies previous sewing skills to create something intended for a special purpose with the focus being on examining the wardrobe and constructing accessories. The student creates something designed to meet a special purpose - altering and existing paper pattern if necessary.
