The government mandated Health Program focuses around 5 major themes or strands: 1. Self Awareness and Acceptance 2. Relating to Others 3. Life Careers 4. Body Knowledge and Care 5. Human Sexuality At John Ware we try to create an inverted pyramid of knowledge and growth centered on these themes. Thus we have a progression to more sophisticated concepts as a student moves through grade 7, 8 and 9.
We have a central theme at each grade level which topics will be related. The themes and topics for each grade level are listed below and will generally be 3 to 5 weeks duration. This is reasonable since students only have 2 Health classes in each 6 day cycle.
Grade 7 Theme- Self
1. Attitudes
2. Time Management and Organization
3. Gender roles & Stereotypes
4. Communication and Relationships
5. Human Sexuality
Grade 8 Theme-Changes from Personal Appraisal
1. Self Appraisal Tools and Techniques
2. Self-awareness & self-concept
3. Relating to Others
4. Youth & the Law
5. Human Sexuality
Grade 9 Theme-Personal and Career Awareness
1. Self-awareness and self-concept
2. decision-making
3. Careers & Senior High Registration
4. Factors Effecting Lifestyles & Employment
5. Human Sexuality
Evaluation runs the gamut, reports, skits, posters, oral presentations, peer and personal evaluations, tests, and videos. A minimum of 5 different items are evaluated to arrive at a term mark for each student. The final mark is based on 25% per term.
