Teachers and parents are looking for ways of helping adolescents who are experiencing difficulties in their home schools. Therefore, the purpose of the Behavior Assessment Program is to help schools and families assess youths in terms of behavioral and/or academic problems, and to recommend alternative placement and/or strategies which could be implemented in the student's home school. The Behavior Assessment Program essentially serves the south side of the city.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
1. To assess student behavior by analyzing past and present school records, by interviewing the student and his parents using a life-style assessment tool by testing, and by observing the student's classroom performance, by constant interaction with the Student and frequent home contact.
2. To provide a (time-out) encouragement process, in a segregated classroom, in order to stablilize students.
3. To clarify values, and teach more effective ways of communicating with teachers, parents, and peers.
4. To consult and collaborate with teachers, parents and students in an effort to help, referred adolescents with their emotional, academic and behavioral problems.
5. To write a report suggesting practical strategies for helping, the referred adolescents and staff at their future placement.
INDICATORS OF PROGRAM SUCCESS;
1. The referred students return to their community schools and demonstrate improved attitude and behavior, often with additional strategies and altered program plans in place.
2. Appropriate alternative placement is found after being assessed by the Behavior Assessment Program.
3. Parents and teachers are pleased with the assessment and encouragement given to the troubled youths. Outside agencies are utilized when necessary, as well as support services for adolescents and their families.
4. The referred students co-operate academically and behaviorally inside the Behavior Assessment Program classroom.
